Thomas O’Brien wears many hats—product designer, interior designer, entrepreneur, shopkeeper—the list goes on. He is the proprietor of Aero Studios and has lines with Hickory Chair, Visual Comfort & Co., Lee Jofa, Reed & Barton, Waterworks, and Target to name a few. And just as this design visionary takes on multiple roles, so does his New York apartment. This large room, with its two-story windows serves a studio and bedroom for Thomas. Not only do I love how well the design works with the bones of the space, I am also quite drawn to how layered everything is. You can almost guarantee that every last item in the space means something to Thomas, imbuing it with a personal, inspired quality. Although symmetry typically has my heart, I really like that there is a sort of organized chaos to the space. While everything looks artfully arranged, it could have all just landed in its place just as easily, though we know that would be out of character for Thomas, who is so thoughtful in the way in which he designs. There is an inviting warmth in the space—a result of the mixture of textures and styles.
